Treatment in the NHS offers the advantage of an expert team with varied sub-specialty interests supporting the care of a patient, which is often missing with a single doctor providing care in the private sector. With Joint Motion, we bring the advantages of this collaborative team approach to the private sector.
All the surgeons in Joint Motion work at Leeds Teaching Hospitals as part of a team with a proven track record in excellence. We now have the opportunity to bring the benefits of this shared learning and collaborative working gained over many years to the private sector to set new standards in high quality patient care.

Honorary Senior Lecture, University of Leeds
Oxford University Medical School 1982-1988, Basic Surgical Training; Oxford, Gloucester, University Clinical lecturer, Nuffield Orthopaedic centre, Oxford. 1992-1998
I have always worked to improve the experience and clinical outcome for patients. As Clinical Director of elective orthopaedic surgery in Leeds I lead the development and opening of the new elective orthopaedic centre at Chapel Allerton Hospital in 2005. I then became the national clinical lead for improvement in joint replacement at the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement and then for Patient Safety. I was the national clinical lead for the Patient Safety First campaign leading the national introduction of the WHO Safer Surgery checklist and was a senior clinical advisor at the National Patient Safety Association.
In my clinical work, constantly improving my clinical service has been the overriding purpose and I am a member of the European Expert group in rapid recovery from surgery which aims to minimise the impacts of surgery and enhance recovery and outcomes. I also sit on several international groups developing and examining the introduction of new technology.
Throughout my career it has been working as a clinical team with trusted colleagues that has clearly offered patients a better service. The routine discussion of cases, establishing an effective governance and review process and providing immediate access for patients to a clinical group is unquestionably the route to a safe, effective and high quality service. JointMotion is a group of established surgeons, with proven high quality outcomes, who have worked together for up to 15 years in the NHS delivering these key elements of an excellent service in the private sector. I am truly excited to be part of a group offering a complete step change in service and look forward to continually improving what we do and how we do it.

I am a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Spire Leeds and Leeds Teaching Hospitals. I qualified in 2002 from the University of Leeds Medical School. Following basic surgical training I became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) in 2005. My specialist orthopaedic training was in the Yorkshire region and I became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) in 2012.
My international hip fellowship was undertaken in Denmark under Professor Kjeld Soballe, Mr Martin Lamm and Mr Bent Lund where I gained further exposure to hip replacement and hip arthroscopy. I learnt the technique of minimally invasive PAO (peri-acetabular osteotomy) under world renowned PAO surgeon Prof Kjeld Soballe. I also undertook nationally recognised fellowship training in hip arthroscopy and total hip replacement under Mr Jon Conroy, Harrogate, UK.
I was appointed as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, with a special interest in adolescent and young adult hip surgery, at the Leeds General Infirmary in 2014.
I perform PAO (pelvic acetabular osteotomies), femoral osteotomy and joint preserving hip surgery in young adults. I also perform Hip arthroscopy for FAI (femoro-acetabular impingement), labral tears and other hip conditions to reduce pain and preserve patient’s natural hip joints. I also perform THA (total hip arthroplasty). I have started to perform THA surgery through an anterior muscle sparing approach (DAA) in an attempt to improve patient outcome from total hip replacement surgery.
I submit my arthroplasty and non-arthroplasty surgical outcomes to the national registers to ensure my patient outcomes continue to perform to the highest level.
I also have an elective and trauma paediatric practice that allows me to transition hip conditions that affect patients in childhood (such as Hip dysplasia, Perthes disease and SCFE (slipped capital femoral epiphysis)) seamlessly into my adult practice. I perform roughly 150 paediatric trauma cases per year as part of my on call NHS and private practice, including forearm and lower limb injuries along with infection cases.
I also undertook an MSc (Mechanical Engineering) investigating the use of bone graft in total hip replacement at the University of Leeds during my registrar training.
I am principle investigator (PI) in several national paediatric orthopaedic clinical trials including BOSS (investigating current UK practice in Perthes disease and SCFE) and SCIENCE (evaluating the outcome of conservative versus operative management of medial epicondyle fractures)
I am PI in the OSTRICH RCT a £1.5 million funding research project investigating the role of Orthotics in flat feet in the paediatric population here in the UK.
I recently secured funding to investigate the use of Procalcitonin as a blood marker for patients affected by septic arthritis in the paediatric population.
I have presented internationally and recently published in BMJ (British Medical Journal) on the investigation and management of AVN (avascular necrosis) of the femoral head.
I was born in Edinburgh and am a proud Scot but have become an honorary Yorkshireman during my time “down south”. I am married with four children. I live in Leeds and enjoy an active life outside work actively participate in golf, squash, cycling and running.
I was recently appointed as Deputy Clinical Director for the Children’s Hospital here in Leeds. I look forward to being actively involved shaping and building the new Leeds Children’s Hospital over the next 5 year after recently securing NHS funding for this exciting project.
I became a member of Joint Motion Healthcare to formalise the excellent working practice we as Leeds arthroplasty surgeons offer to our patients.
Our multidisciplinary arthroplasty weekly meeting highlights and showcases the complex and highly skilled cases that we perform here in Leeds that makes us the tertiary referral centre for the Yorkshire region.
Our team practice allows us to provide the governance and assurance that our clinical outcomes are world-class for our patients.

I am a Consultant orthopaedic surgeon practising in Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Nuffield Hospital, and Spire Hospital. I studied medicine in Aberdeen, following which I commenced my basic surgical training, initially in Aberdeen, and subsequently spending a year studying orthopaedics in Wellington, New Zealand. I became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2005.
My higher surgical training was based in Aberdeen. During this time, I was the clinical lecturer for orthopaedics in the North of Scotland. I completed my higher surgical training in 2012 and then commenced senior fellowship posts.
My first fellowship was spent in Aberdeen, focusing on joint replacement, complex joint replacement, and revision joint replacements. During this time, I also commenced novel research on ways to image cartilage.
My second fellowship brought me to Leeds, furthering my experience in joint replacement, unicompartmental knee replacement and revision joint replacement. I thoroughly enjoyed working in Leeds and was delighted to accept a Consultant post at Leeds Teaching Hospitals in 2014.
My interest relates to painful conditions around the knee and hip.
My surgical expertise focuses on:
I also specialise in complex hip and knee problems as a result of haemophilia. I am the Orthopaedic lead for the Haemophilia Service in Leeds.
I am currently the clinical audit lead for adult trauma at Leeds General Infirmary.
I submit all my joint replacement and revision joint replacement data to the National Joint Registry as part of ongoing governance.
My research interests are varied but principle areas are:
I met my wife during my training in Aberdeen. We now live in Leeds with our two daughters and dog.
I enjoy music, both listening and playing several instruments. I enjoy model making and admit to still thoroughly enjoying Lego (sometimes with my children). I have been a keen skier from a young age, and I enjoy tennis.
The surgeons in Joint Motion Healthcare all work in Leeds Teaching Hospitals. On a weekly basis, we discuss complex cases, we show our pre-operative and post-operative x-rays of our joint replacements. On occasions, when complex revision work is required, we work together having two consultants present to do the operation. We are very much a team, and it is with this ethos that we set to continue this collaboration in the private sector forming Joint Motion Healthcare.
I feel strongly that patients should get the correct treatment for the condition they present with. This does not always mean an operation. The governance structure we have built into Joint Motion Healthcare allows us to continually ensure that patients are receiving the best clinical opinion and management.

I joined the group to continue working with the team I work closely with at Chapel Allerton where we treat complex cases successfully. I believe Jointmotion will enable us to extend this governance structure to the private sector and give assurance to our patients that they will receive expert, safe and up-to-date treatment for any hip or knee problems they may have.

After studying medicine at Leicester university medical school I moved to Yorkshire to complete my higher surgical training. I gained further fellowship training in Warwick with Mr Steve Young and Leeds with Mr Martin Stone. These fellowships focused on uncemented hip replacement surgery and revision hip and knee replacement surgery.
I am married to my wife Ewa and have a daughter. I have lived and worked in Yorkshire for the past 15 years. My non-medical interests include cycling, car mechanics and home improvements.
Orthopaedic surgery is very much a team exercise and this extends from decision making in clinic to performing surgery with an experienced colleague. All members of the joint motion healthcare group are used to working and collaborating together in Leeds teaching hospitals. This presented an ideal opportunity to pool experience and knowledge and create a unique governance structure for private patients. This will ensure high quality outcomes and champion excellence in clinic care.
